2012Merlot-RosewoodRosewood Estates Winery 2012 Select Merlot

~ August 2014
The growing season of 2012 was very warm and sunny, and it allowed us to hand pick grapes with intense, ripe fruit flavours. Our 2012 Select Series Merlot is definitely showing the benefits of this great season.   Plum, black cherry and blueberry all vie for attention on both the nose and pallet. Melding in to this ripe fruit core are sweet spices derived from time in French Oak barrels. Cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon all show through. Milk chocolate and vanilla flavours add more depth and intrigue to an already complex and concentrated wine. This is a very approachable wine that will drink well over the next 3-5 years.

~ July 2014
Tuesday’s Cabernet Franc
Two vines so distant and different in many ways yet intricately united through social media. This living metaphor brought forward this exceptional Cabernet Franc who’s life from bud to bottle was chronicled pictorially every Tuesday alongside its Okanagan mate on twitter and other sites. “This nose takes me right back to Grandma’s plum cake”, Brian mused, “and there is the hint of evergreen forest smoke carried on the wind. This is taking me back to where our vine’s twitter mate is growing!” Okanagan born and raised alongside a cherished relationship with his grandparents, Brian knows these scents well. Drink in this powerful wine and your eyes may show a mist from the smoke of a distant fire.

~ June 2014
Evening Shadow
This varietal Cabernet Sauvignon is a rarity for Vineland Estates as our winemaker Brian is not a believer in the varietal as a stand-alone-staple for the Ontario climate. Still, an ideal, “red weather” growing season, such as we experienced in 2012, can make it possible to produce a world-stage worthy Ontario Cabernet Sauvignon. This particular wine has silenced the critics and ironically, its maker. It has a fully developed, rich, ripe nose of dark berries and cigar box plus an integrated palate of complexity, subtlety and resolved silky tannins. What is Brian saying? Not too much. He is busy enjoying this wine as it elegantly washes down the words he must eat.

You’ve met this wine before. When the 2010 Cabernet Franc Reserve was born it was the cutest “baby” you ever saw. As it matured it was quiet, well behaved and beautiful. Then the teenage years hit and it rebelled and gave nothing but misery. Happily, this period was not to last. As time passed, the storms within the wine subsided and the true soul emerged. All the growing pains were forgotten and the wine revealed its inner greatness of rich concentrated fruit, minerality and firm but silky tannins. This is wine that was forged in flames of adolescence and it is better for it.

The Gamay vine loves a “warmer bed” all year to flourish and produce the best grapes for vintage. Our Greenlane vineyard is almost completely surrounded by development and that man-made terroir has created a heat sink pocket that keeps the encircled vineyard warmer all year round. Re-Purposed Pinot Meunier
Initially planted over a decade ago with the time honoured notion of adding this grape to our sparkling program, this varietal had a different idea. The result is this engaging wine of depth, complexity and alluring subtleties. Cheers to listening to the vines within their home!

2011 Oct-VEW-2010 Rose BTLVineland Estates 2010 “Oh Really” Rosé

~ October 2011
“I love this dry rosé. What is it made from?” “Gamay actually” “Oh really?” Well how else did you think that it got its name? This fine and balanced rosé is made from a grape variety that Vineland is not known to produce. It displays a depth of summer berries on the nose, a brisk and balanced acidity on the palate and a length of taste that allows it to accompany any light fare. This wine is also a skilful chameleon appealing to both white and red lovers. In fact, this is the perfect wine for red wine aficionados who desire a cool quaff.

2011March-VEW-2005CabFrancBTLVineland Estates 2005 Cabernet Franc

~ March 2011
Time in our aging cellars has only served to enhance and expand this layered and haunting wine. In its youth it was much sought after for its lively raspberry, currant and blackberry essences plus its vigorous structure. As expected, the years have allowed the individual primary fruit characteristics to meld into one, broad, complex and yet elusive “berry” note while the acid and tannin structures have softened to reveal a “sippable” wine that is at the same time food friendly.

Dry and just medium bodied, this is a versatile wine that will go well with tomato-based pasta as well as roast chicken, turkey or red meats.

2009tawseSketchesRoseTawse Winery 2009 Sketches of Niagara Rosé

~ August 2010
Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc all came together to produce this fine dry rosé. Each varietal was vinified individually with just enough skin contact to extract a bright pinkish hue and a depth of flavour.Once completed, we brought all the pieces together in a blend that profiled the best of each constituent wine. The final result is a rosé that is approachable, balanced and in many ways very complex. This wine is filled with cherry, dark berry, plum, rhubarb and spice.
